It is one thing to succeed at the goal of losing weight which is certainly difficult on its own. It is another thing to be able to actually keep the weight off. It is the latter point that most people falter with and that is why it is worth a closer look. So, how do we define effective weight loss?

The first step is to launch a weight reduction program with the foresight that there is no such creature as sudden motivation. There is no dieting or workout guru that will magically appear to fire you up and get you to shed all your unwanted pounds. You will need to come to the realization that success will be based on your own work and your own individual self standards. As soon as you realize your current weight situation is not what you want it to be, you will discover the motivation you need to succeed.

We begin on a weight reduction program with the knowledge that there is no such thing as any sudden motivation. There is no Dieting Muse or Workout Muse that’s going to come down and land on your shoulder and suddenly get you all fired up to melt those unwanted pounds. You have to realize that the only things that exist are you and your self-standards. When you decide that your present weight and your present looks are simply unacceptable and beneath your standards, you’ll find all the motivation you need.

Besides the intrinsic motivation that you need, losing weight is also about taking responsibility for yourself and your life. It is said that life is only 10% what happens to you, while the other 90% is all up to you. Effective weight loss is no different. The person who is going to lose the weight for you is not your trainer. It’s not your coach. It’s not the author of some book you read. It’s not either one of your parents. It’s not your siblings or your friends. It’s you, and you alone.
Once you have been motivated by your own standards and you have decided to take responsibility for yourself, in order to lose weight and keep it off you have to take effective weight loss practices seriously. They aren’t a game, they aren’t just some whim, and they aren’t a once in a while thing. Losing and keeping off weight require new habituations. In some ways you’ll have to adopt a whole new lifestyle.

As quickly as you have made the determination to lose your unwanted weight, you then need to decide upon a specific weight loss program designed to work for you. You need to determine whether you are an ectomorph, an endomorph, or a mesomorph. At this point you will need to make specific determinations based on your own individual dietary habits that need to be changed. Medical conditions that may be getting in the way of your goals need to be addressed. Performing as much research as possible along with consulting a personal trainer will weigh heavily in your ability to succeed with your goals.

The place where most people attempting to lose weight fail is at the end! They lose the weight that they wanted to, and then they think they can go right back to their old ways that put on the weight in the first place. Why would you go back to the things that did not work? Well, change is difficult, somewhat painful, and frightening for most people, that’s why.

Effective weight loss will always mean making a lifelong commitment to performing the steps needed to drop the weight required to change your physique. At this point, you will need to make the proper commitment and purpose to ensure the weight stayed off.

For the most part people pack on the extra pounds over a lengthy period of time - many months to several years. Yet, when they are finally fed up with their weight gain they try to take it off in a very short time - often in weeks or a couple of months. Losing weight quickly is a disaster waiting to happen. Not only is it unhealthy because most people diet to lose weight thus depriving themselves and their body of needed nutrients, but people who have rapid weight loss tend to put it back on - and then some.

The trigger for many people wanting to lose weight is some special event coming up in the distant future - a wedding, a family gathering, a class reunion, or even the summer season. Therefore, there’s usually plenty of time to think this through and to do it right. Here’s a likely scenario to ponder. You open your mail and receive an invitation to your 20th class reunion dated approximately 6 months from now. Your first thought is, “How do I look?” and you remember that in the last year you have put on a little extra weight - 10 pounds to be exact. Your next thought is,”Maybe I shouldn’t go.” Sound all too familiar?

You really have four choices. If you’re like many people you will wait until 3 or 4 weeks before the reunion and crash diet to fit into that dress or suit to look good for the event. You could do nothing and go as you are and be self-conscious about how you look. You could decline the invitation - after all they remember you as lean and mean - why spoil your image. Or, you could start right now and easily lose those 10 pounds without even changing your eating habits. That’s right, this is not a misprint - I said without even changing your eating habits.

The trick is to realize the math behind losing weight and knowing that more calories in than out will put on weight and consequently if you take in fewer calories than you use - the keyword being “use” - then you will lose weight. So let’s start by calculating how many calories you’ve gained over the last year. A pound of body fat is approximately 3500 calories. Therefore, your 10 pound gain is equal to 35,000 calories - Wow! But is that really so much? Not if you divide those 35,000 calories by 360 days. You have actually only consumed 97 extra calories per day above what you need to survive in order to gain those 10 pounds. Think about that - it’s an extra beer, a cookie or two, a muffin - it all adds up.

So now how to get rid of that extra weight? It’s easy and it’s painless - really. All you have to do is double reverse what you have done in the last year - double because you want to do it in 6 months. So let’s break it down - you consumed 97 extra calories per day to gain the weight. Doubling 97 tells you that you will need to use 194 calories extra per day to “stop” gaining weight. And if you want to “lose” weight, you also need to use an additional 194 calories for a total of 388 calories per day. Now does this sound like a whole lot of calories? This can be done very easily by burning (using) more calories per day without hardly affecting your daily diet. The whole point of this article is not to eat less but to utilize more calories in your daily life. Some call it exercise - but that’s an ugly word to many people so let’s stay away from that word. Let’s just say you need to be more active.

There so many ways to burn those calories that are fun and enjoyable - play golf for an hour (281 cal) - dance for an hour (317 cal) walk for an hour, even slowly (215 cal) - go fishing (201 cal) - get the picture. It doesn’t have to be work, and it doesn’t have to be called exercise. Just do something for your pleasure everyday and the weight will come off. And the fun part is that you do not have to change a thing about how or what you eat - almost. You can either continue to eat as before and use (burn) the 388 calories or you can help yourself by eliminating something easy from your diet. Look at what you eat, look at the labels - believe me junk food is usually high in calories. It won’t be hard to cut 100 or 150 calories from your diet. Cut out one beer, forego the fries at McDonald’s, eat one less muffin, 15 less potato chips - it doesn’t have to be earth shattering - just 100 calories will help make it easier to achieve your goal of 388 calories a day. It’s entirely up to you. This weight loss program is so easy; you practically never have to think about it, you only have to be patient because the weight will come off ever so slowly - but it will come off. Just stay on track - and remember, just because you played an extra round of golf today doesn’t entitle you to an extra beer and cookies.

So eat healthy and smart - stay with your normal meals if you want to, but to be successful - you absolutely must get out there and stay active. You will lose the weight for that big day. Everyone will admire how fit and trim you are and you will stand tall and proud - because you were able to achieve your goal.
